On this day in 2014, Philip Seymour Hoffman, considered one of the most talented and versatile actors of his generation, dies of an accidental drug overdose at age 46 in New York City. During his career, the prolific performer appeared in more than 50 movies, including \u201cCapote,\u201d \u201cDoubt\u201d and \u201cThe Hunger Games\u201d series, and earned a reputation for playing difficult or quirky characters. Hoffman also was an accomplished stage actor and director.<\/p>\n
Born July 23, 1967, Hoffman was raised in Fairport, New York, and developed an interest in theater while growing up. He studied acting at New York University, from which he graduated in 1989, and went on to make his small-screen debut in a 1991 episode of \u201cLaw & Order.\u201d The next year, he earned his first big-screen credit in an indie film titled \u201cTriple Bogey on a Par Five Hole.\u201d Hoffman garnered attention for his supporting role as a spoiled prep school student in the Oscar-winning film \u201cScent of a Woman\u201d (1992), which he followed with appearances in such movies as \u201cNobody\u2019s Fool\u201d (1994), \u201cTwister\u201d (1996), \u201cBoogie Nights\u201d (1997), \u201cThe Big Lebowski\u201d (1998) \u201cMagnolia\u201d (1999) and \u201cThe Talented Mr. Ripley\u201d (1999). Increasingly in demand, Hoffman then took on roles in films including \u201cAlmost Famous\u201d (2000), \u201cPunch-Drunk Love\u201d (2002), \u201cThe 25th Hour\u201d (2002), \u201cCold Mountain\u201d (2003) and \u201cAlong Came Polly\u201d (2004).<\/p>\n

He won an Academy Award in the best actor category for his portrayal of author Truman Capote in \u201cCapote\u201d (2005), and received Oscar nominations for best supporting actor for his role as a CIA agent in \u201cCharlie Wilson\u2019s War\u201d (2007) and for his performance as a priest in \u201cDoubt\u201d (2008). Other film credits include \u201cMission: Impossible III\u201d (2006), \u201cMoneyball\u201d (2011) and \u201cThe Hunger Games\u201d series. Hoffman garnered a third best supporting actor Oscar nomination for his role as a cult leader in \u201cThe Master\u201d (2012).<\/p>\n
Hoffman also was an acclaimed stage actor and director, who helped co-found a theater company, LAByrinth, and earned Tony Award nominations for his performances in \u201cTrue West\u201d (2000), \u201cLong Day\u2019s Journey into Night\u201d (2003) and \u201cDeath of a Salesman\u201d (2012), in which he starred as Willy Loman.<\/p>\n
On February 2, 2014, Hoffman, who had struggled with drug addiction in his early 20s but was sober for many years before relapsing in 2012, was found dead in his Manhattan apartment.
